We conducted a specific synthesis study to assess and compare forest carbon data sources and estimates for Eastern Europe. The availability of forest biomass and land cover change data measured in Eastern Europe remains poor. Although the comparison of plot-based and remote sensing-based biomass estimation shows an increasing level of agreement, the lack of reliable ground data limits a thorough error analysis for Eastern European biomass changes. There have to be significant investments in acquiring fundamental datasets for Eastern Europe. Emphasis should be on integrating monitoring approaches to combine the advantages of different data streams (in-situ, remote sensing, modeling) in the future to overcome data "deserts" for Eastern Europe.
