New research shows 64 countries cut their fossil CO2 emissions during 2016-2019, but the rate of reduction needs to increase tenfold to meet the Paris Agreement aims to tackle climate change.
VERIFY Second Networking meeting was an interesting and useful meeting for scientists to discuss on their developments on verification of GHG emissions and for inventory experts to see how they can be used and explain more precisely their needs. It gathered almost 70 persons on each session and was held in November 2020.
Reliable quantification of the sources and sinks of greenhouse gases (GHGs), together with trends and uncertainties, is essential to monitoring the progress in mitigating anthropogenic emissions under the Paris Agreement.
The study was conducted by an international team of experts and is also supported by the H2020 VERIFY research (Work package 3).
VERIFY project provided a direct contribution to this annual budget and the estimation of the fluxes exchanged between the atmosphere, ocean and terrestrial carbon reservoirs as well as the anthropogenic emissions (in particular with contributors from LSCE, UEA and CICERO).
The 4th ICOS Science conference was held virtually from Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th of September, 2020. The theme of this international conference was « Knowledge for shaping the future – understanding the Earth’s biogeochemical processes ».
A set of 17 studies results have been published in a special issue of Philosophical Transactions B of the Royal Society. These studies have used data from the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS) and showed how nature and crops in Europe respond to extremely dry conditions, such as occurred over the last three summers, 2018-2020.
On 10th of September, a workshop between WP1 and WP3 has been held on use of biomass maps for national GHG inventory.
